How To Create The Future

Table of Contents

Most people will spend their lives on autopilot, never taking a step back to understand what they really want.

Whether the ladder they are climbing is against the right wall.

They play not to lose rather than play to win.

Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living.

A plane just one degree off course ends up a mile further away for every 60 miles traveled.

If you have not adjusted your route for a while, even a slight misalignment will have you end up in a completely different place.

Sometimes we need to change big things. Like the plant that needs to be transferred to a bigger pot to continue growing and thriving, we might have outgrown our environment.

Sometimes we only need minor adjustments. Infusing more intentionality in our relationships. Saying no to energy drainers. Recommitting to our life’s work.

Breaking out of the autopilot mode starts with knowing what you want to experience and create.

Once you know your desires, your subconscious will work hard to come up with ideas to get them.

You start scanning your environment for opportunities.

You take aligned action.

It is a matter of time until your vision board becomes your photo album.

So, take a step back from the urgent and focus on the important. What do you really want?

Think big and different

A sign that you have done a good job defining your vision is that you may feel embarrassed to share it with friends and family members.

You are afraid that it sounds too grandiose or unreasonable. If that happens to you, you are on the right track.

George Bernard Shaw said: “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

Paypal co-founder and investor Peter Thiel asks one question to identify someone who is a promising leader:

“What important truth do very few people agree with you on?”

If the future is to look different from today, it will be created by the people whose ideas we consider unreasonable right now.

When creating your vision, tap into the unconventional truths you believe in. Do not be afraid to be contrarian.

Then surround yourself with other ambitious misfits to fight the loneliness that comes with being a pioneer.

Conclusion

Abraham Lincoln said the most reliable way to predict the future is to create it.

A vision is the first and arguably the most crucial step in creating your future.

But more importantly, a vision is a tool that will make your now more exciting. We are at our best when we believe that our future is bigger than our past.

We are at our best when we intentionally create freedom, joy, love, impact, and abundance for us and our people.
